Kool & The Gang – spirit of the boogie

spiritoftheboogieUnfortunately most people know the finest soul & funk acts primarely of their later disco period. In the late 70’s/early 80’s the funk was more and more replaced by disco and with that also came the big commercial successes for acts like Earth Wind & Fire, KC & The Sunshine Band and Kool & The Gang, to name a few. The sound became cooler, the beat steadier, the vocals smoother.

But if you want the pure, racy and honest funk sound you have to go back to the early and mid 70’s. This album, Spirit Of The Boogie (1975), imho is the best Kool & The Gang album and it is definitely the band at its top. These `primitive’ grooves are so vibrant it is unable to sit still while listening to it. The theme of the album is about their african roots (with titles like Jungle Boogie and Ancestral Ceremony) and the artwork (a colorful foldout cover with african drawings) is a seamless fit.
